Dr. Artur Indzhykulian received his Medical Degree (2004) and PhD (2008) from Dnipropetrovsk State Medical Academy in Ukraine, trained in medicine, anatomy, pathology and physiology. For the past decade he has worked specifically on the stereocilia bundle of vertebrate hair cells—its structure, development, mechanics and role in mechanotransduction. This has included work to elucidate the molecular and cell biological basis of hereditary deafness. During his postdoctoral training with Dr. Gregory Frolenkov (University of Kentucky, 2009-2012) and Dr. David Corey (Harvard Medical School, 2012-2017), he has studied a number of mouse models lacking proteins important for the hair cell function and bundle morphology. Mutations in most of these proteins cause deafness, while many also cause blindness in Usher syndrome.
To pursue his passion for hearing research, Dr. Indzhykulian has started his research group as an Assistant Professor at Eaton-Peabody Laboratory of Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, home to one of the largest communities of otolaryngology researchers in the world.
